The palace is based on byzantine construction, but the arches of the androne in the water floor, which were much altered during the 19th century, are the only visible remains of the predecessor. In the 17 century, the piani nobili were re-designed in typical austere and traditional forms. Presumably in the 19th century the constructions in front of the left and right wing were added. Besides the large garden on the right towards the Palazzo Contarini Polignac another courtyard can be found behind the left wing.
19th century interior decoration is conserved. Several branches of the Sammartini family possess the large complex.
